Smart ist eine vergleichsweise junge Automarkte. Die Geschichte von Smart beginnt im Jahr 1993, als der Schweizer Nicolas G. Hayek, Gründer der Swatch-Gruppe, seine Vision eines kleinen, pfiffigen Autos realisiert. Es soll zugleich preisgünstig und damit ein Auto für jedermann sein. 1994 wird schließlich das Unternehmen als Micro Compact Car AG in Biel als gemeinsame Tochtergesellschaft von Daimler-Benz und der SMH Automobile gegründet. In Zusammenarbeit mit Volkswagen wird der erste Prototyp von smart, das Swatch Car, produziert, dessen Markteinführung wegen Differenzen der Unternehmer jedoch nie erfolgt. Stattdessen kommt 1998 der Stadtflitzer smart fortwo auf den Markt, der auch serienmäßig produziert wird. Wegen steigender Entwicklungskosten verkauft Hayek das Unternehmen an Daimler Benz.

Der kleine Smart entwickelt sich zu einem Großen in der Automobilwelt

In Kooperation mit BRABUS entsteht schließlich die smart-BRABUS GmbH. Das Unternehmen verfeinert den smart fortwo technisch und lässt das moderne Automobil in einem völlig neuen Licht erscheinen. Bei der Präsentation des fortwo 101 staunt die Öffentlichkeit über die Ausstattung mit einem 101 PS starken Motor. Im Frühjahr 2002 kommt das smart fortwo cabrio auf den Markt, das in Anlehnung an das fortwo coupé entwickelt wurde.

Smart mischt den Roadster-Markt auf

Das fortwo cabrio verfügt über ein stufenlos regulierbares Textilverdeck, das sich sogar während der Fahrt öffnen lässt. Auch das Fun-Car crossblade von Smart imponiert mit einer besonderen Wetterbeständigkeit, obwohl das limitierte Modell weder über eine Frontscheibe, noch über ein Dach verfügt und ausschließlich mit Sicherheitsbügeln versehen ist.
