Die Anfänge des BMW M3 reichen bis in das Jahr 1986 zurück. In diesem Jahr erschien der erste BMW M3, firmenintern als E30 bezeichnet, auf dem Automobilmarkt. Beim BMW M3 handelt es sich um ein besonders leistungsstarkes Sportmodell der BMW 3-er Reihe. Produziert wird dieser Wagen nicht von BMW selbst, sondern von der BMW-Tochterfirma BMW M GmbH. Auch die Entwicklung dieses Fahrzeuges lag in den Händen dieser Tochterfirma.

Der erste Vertreter dieses mittlerweile in vierter Generation gefertigten Sportwagens verfügte über einen 2,3 Liter-Vierzylindermotor der bis zu 215 PS stark war. Zunächst wurde der Ur-M3 nur als Limousine gebaut. Erst im September 1989 war der BMW M3 auch als Cabrio erhältlich. Auffällig an diesem Modell sind vor allem die Extremen Kotflügelverbreiterungen und der überdimensional wirkende Hechspoiler.

Mit einem 3,0 Liter-Reihensechszylinder wurde die folgende Generation des BMW M3 bei ihrem Serienstart, 1992, ausgestattet. Als viertürige Limousine stand der BMW M3 erstmalig ab dem Jahr 1993 zur Verfügung. Zwei Jahre später erhielt der BMW M3 den für den BMW Z3 M-Roadster verwandten 3,2 Liter-Sechszylinder mit 236 kW (321 PS) und 350 Nm.

Mit der Einführung der dritten Generation des BMW M3, 2001, konnte die Leistung des 3,2 Liter-Reihensechszylinders noch einmal auf 343 PS erhöht werden. Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit lag nun bei 250 km/h. Den Sprint aus dem Stand auf 100 km/h konnte der BMW M3, mit der internen Werksbezeichnung E46, nun in 5,2 Sekunden zurücklegen. Das Interesse an einer BMW M3 Limousine mit vier Türen war nicht so groß, so das die dritte Generation des BMW M3 nur als Coupé und Cabrio gefertigt wurde. Allerdings wurde von dieser Generation ein Sondermodell mit Bezeichnung BMW M3 CSL aufgelegt. In diesem wurden leichtere Materialien, zum Beispiel ein Dach aus Kohlefaserverbundwerkstoff, und ein leistungsfähigerer Motor mit 360 PS eingebaut.

Seit 2007 ist nun die aktuelle Generation des BMW M3 käuflich zu erwerben. Zum Einsatz kommt nun ein völlig neuer 4 Liter-V8-Motor mit gigantischen 420 PS. Im Vergleich dazu nimmt sich der BMW M3 der ersten Generation geradezu bescheiden aus. Die Beschleunigungswerte konnten noch einmal um 4/10 auf 4,8 Sekunden verbessert werden. Seit 2008 ist auch wieder eine Limousinen-Version erhältlich. BMW M3 Cabrio, mit Stahlklappdach und Coupe stehen ebenfalls im Angebot. Eine Touring genannte Kombiversion ist ebenfalls für die nahe Zukunft geplant.
