Fast sechzig Jahre später präsentieren die Bayrischen Motorenwerke die zweite Generation der BMW 3er Reihe und damit den BMW 328i.

Der BMW 328i wurde sowohl in der BMW-Baureihe E36 als auch in der Baureihe E46 gebaut. In der Baureihe E36, welche im Jahr 1994 auf den Markt kam bildet dieses Fahrzeug das Spitzenmodell. Der 2,8 Liter-Sechszylindermotor verfügt über 142 kW / 193 PS und ein maximales Drehmoment von 280 Nm bei 3950 U/Min. Damit ist es ihm möglich den Spurt von 0-100 km/h in 7 Sekunden hinter sich zu bringen. Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit liegt bei 240 km/h.

Im Jahr 1998 erfolgte der Wechsel auf die nächste BMW 3-er Generation (E46). Der BMW 328i der E46-Baureihe wurde mit dem gleichen Motor wie sein Vorgänger ausgestattet, so dass alle wesentlichen Daten übereinstimmen. Wie auch sein Vorgänger verließ der BMW 328i dieser Generation das Produktionsband als Limousine, Kombi (Touring), Coupé und Cabrio. Coupé und Cabrio erhielt als zusätzliche Bezeichnung „Ci“. Allerdings war dem BMW 328i E46 keine lange Produktionszeit beschieden. Schon nach zwei Jahren, gab BMW dem Ruf nach größeren Motoren nach und baute von nun an einen 3 Liter-Reihensechszylinder mit 231 PS an dessen Stelle ein, der dann auch das Spitzenmodell dieser Generation darstellte.

In der neuesten BMW 3-er Generation (E90) gibt es keinen 328i mehr. Das Spitzenmodell bildet hier der BMW 335 i/xi mit 3 Liter Hubraum, 306 PS und 400 Nm maximalem Drehmoment.
